Things to Do In and Around Marmaris

  .

Jeep Safaris offer visitors to Marmaris the perfect opportunity to explore the surrounding area. A typical journey takes tourists through rambling woodlands and traditional Turkish villages before arriving at a secluded cove for lunch and a cooling swim. Popular routes include the Bozburun Peninsula, Orhaniye, Turunç, Akyaka and Gökova.

A Daily Boat Trip is one of the most pleasant ways of passing the day, visiting nearby coves and islands. A wide choice of small and larger boats pick day trippers up typically at the main quay in the town centre opposite the marketplace. Popular destinations include Cennet Adasi (Heaven Island), Turunç and Fosforlu Magara (Phosphorus Cave). At night there are also “moonlight” boat tours.

Excellent shopping facilities in Marmaris are further boosted by the various weekly markets, the most sizeable of which takes place on a Thursday in the town centre. There is also a weekly market in Içmeler (Wednesdays).

A visit to Atlantis Aquapark open since 1997, is a great day out for all the family. There are slides for both children and adults, as well as a large entertainment complex, which includes a disco and an amusement arcade.

The protected site of Cleopatra’s Island located in the Gulf of Gökova, is located some 12km from the main resort by road, followed by a 20 minute boat ride. The Island’s soft, white sand was reputed to have been imported from Egypt to satisfy a whim of Cleopatra herself. A short walk inland brings you to the ruins of a small Roman amphitheatre and a church.

Marmaris Fort built in around 1545, was restored during the 1980s after having sustained extensive damage during the First World War. The Fort, complete with its Archaeology Museum, has been open to the public since 1991. The museum is open to visitors between the hours of 08:30-12:00 and 13:00-17.30 every day except Monday.

Greek island of Rhodes is a popular excursion for those based in and around Marmaris. Services run daily throughout the summer months, departing at around 9.30am and returning in the early evening. The journey takes about an hour.
